Guide to Dumbo in Brooklyn

Brooklyn Bridge Park and ferry terminal
One of the city’s newest public areas, the 85-acre Brooklyn Bridge Park is still expanding, taking over a succession of disused commercial piers along the East River adjacent to DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights. As well as being beautifully landscaped, with a cycle lane, picnic-friendly hills and meadows, natural amphitheaters, and postcard-worthy views of downtown Manhattan – particularly stunning around sunset – it’s one of the main stops for the East River Ferry, which travels between Manhattan and several other stops in Brooklyn, including Williamsburg.

St. Ann’s Warehouse
Situated in a former tobacco warehouse, this live performance space is a DUMBO institution and played a key role in the area’s revitalization. For the past 34 years it has commissioned, produced, and presented a series of performances and events that meet at the intersection of theater and rock and roll, showcasing stars such as Marianne Faithfull, Lou Reed, and John Cale, and innovative theatrical shows like Donmar Warehouse’s all-female Julius Caesar.

Jane’s Carousel
This quirky and beautiful new addition to the waterfront promenade was originally built for an Ohio amusement park in 1922, and it features 48 exquisitely carved horses and two chariots. Developers David and Jane Walentas bought it in the 1980s, and Jane painstakingly restored it by hand to its former glory in her DUMBO studio. Sheltered inside a glass pavilion designed by Jean Nouvel and lit up at night like a beacon, it is now back in operation.
