The local’s guide to Munich

Tanja Roos is an editorial director at a travel website. Half Austrian, half Swedish, Tanja has always felt the pull of different cultures. She lives in Munich with her husband Chris and their two sons. Here are her Munich picks.

Park

Rosengarten is a small, hidden garden close to the River Isar with beautiful flowers and a great atmosphere to read, picnic, and enjoy the lovely scents.
It is a pleasant and less known alternative to Englischer Garten, the Central Park of Munich.

Food + Drink

Fischhäusl

A must. Head to the picturesque Wiener Platz and tuck into some fresh fish at this kiosk.

Wiener Platz

True & 12

Hands down the best ice cream in Munich. Only 12 flavors – all to die for. Enjoy a pizza slice from nearby Pizzesco before or after.

Rosenheimer Strasse 14

Viktualienmarkt

The famous food market in the middle of the city. Stroll around, buy some fruit, vegetables and fresh flowers and enjoy a coffee at Kaffeerösterei.

Viktualienmarkt 6

Röcklplatz

The perfect place if you're traveling with kids. There's a great playground in front of the restaurant where the kids can play while you enjoy a meal.

Vorhölzer

Bar and café at the Department of Architecture at the Technical University. Terrace with great views over Munich.

Arcisstrasse 21

Bar Tabacco

One of the best bars in town. Great selection of late-night dishes, including fabulous fried potatoes. Tucked away in a tiny alley right in the busy heart of Munich.

Schumanns

A Munich classic and an all-time favorite for drinks. They also serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.
