A Ride to Remember

Touring Sonoma by bike not only makes sense for the body and the environment – it also gives you plenty of time to savor the many vineyards and charming townships along the way – after all, every cyclist needs a break sometimes.

Stay here

Photo: In at Occidental

Inn at Occidental

In the small village of Occidental lies this beautiful hotel – a white wooden building with several floors, offering beautiful, spacious rooms, many with a balcony view. It’s so delightful here that it seemed a shame just to stay one night. The town of Occidental is basically just two blocks long, surrounded by redwood trees. Despite this, it’s home to several restaurants.

Madrona Manor

This was a grand private house for 100 years. Now it’s an equally grand hotel, on whose premises are the area’s sole one-star Michelin restaurant. Stay here and feel like royalty!

Fern Grove Cottages

Here you can have your own cottage in the middle of a dazzling sea of flowers. The previous owner had a green thumb, to say the least! The magnificent gardens are full of amazing, colorful flowers. The cabins are large and very charming. There’s also a swimming pool, and I must make special mention of the breakfast here, which was full of homemade delights.

Main Street Bistro

Compared with Occidental, Guerneville feels like a city, with plenty of restaurants. We were perhaps unfortunate that the town’s best restaurant was closed when we visited – or maybe we were very fortunate, as we ended up at Main Street Bistro, which serves world-class lasagna.

Don’t miss the ice cream doled out in a landmark Beaux Arts building in downtown Guerneville. This beautiful former bank also houses a small gift shop and a wine tasting room for one of the local vineyards.

Marimar Estate

We made a detour to Sebastopol to visit this winery. It was founded by Marimar Torres, a member of the Torres wine family – producing Spain’s best known wines. Marimar started out on her own here in the late 1970s. Since the beginning, she’s focused on promoting a female workforce in what historically has been a very male-dominated profession. All the Marimar managers are women; so are the winemakers. A tasting of six different wines costs $20. It took us about 20 minutes to cycle here from the town of Graton.

MacRostie Winery and Vineyards

Less than than a 15-minute ride from Healdsburg, this winery commands a magnificent view of the rolling countryside. It will have you thinking you’re in Italy.

Russian River Valley Tasting Room

This isn’t Landmark Wine’s main base, but it’s a really beautiful spot with excellent wines and a charming shop selling both gifts and delicacies. A big plus? There’s no charge for the tasting. We chose to sample just a couple of the estate’s many wines, rather than do a full tasting, which typically includes six different wines.

Tips

Some Sonoma restaurants are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays so schedule your tour starting midweek or on a Thursday or Friday. And invest in some cycling gear. It may feel a bit ambitious to buy cycling shorts if you’re not an avid cyclist. If you ride in anything else in Sonoma you’ll really stand out from the crowd!
